Good morning from Burton Independent School District!

Congratulations to Burton Panther Boys and Girls Track for winning the Area Meet last week in Flatonia. On to Regional in Pflugerville Friday, May 1st and Saturday, May 2nd. We are very proud of these students.

The Graham Masonic Lodge #20 and members of the Brenham Business Community recently held an Appreciation Banquet and Awards Presentation for area teachers. Allison Schulte who teaches 4th grade at Burton Elementary, Susan Abke who teaches Junior High Science, and Kathy Shedd who teaches High School Social Studies and Coaches Girls Basketball all received honors. We are fortunate to have such fine educators!

Bids for the high school rock building renovation have been accepted and will be awarded at a special meeting tonight for the project to begin soon. We are excited about updating our facilities.  

Early voting for Burton School and Blinn College Board of Trustee elections begin today at the central office. Come out and vote.

Local Students Participate in Texas Reads One Book

At 9:00 a.m. on April 27, 2015, tens of thousands of students and their families across Texas, including students locally in Burton Independent School District, will begin a statewide celebration of literacy by reading the same book at the same time, led by Jason Garrett, head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Garrett will do a videotaped reading of the first chapter of The World According to Humphrey by Betty Birney to kick off the Texas Reads One Book! program.

Through the Texas Reads One Book program, school faculty, staff, students, and students’ families in dozens of elementary schools across the state will read the same book at the same time. Texas Reads One Book! is a statewide version of the One District, One Book (ODOB) and One School, One Book programs, which have been used in dozens of districts and hundreds of schools across the United States and Canada. ODOB is the flagship program of Read to Them, a nonprofit family literacy organization.

The program actively engages families in the reading process, and it also creates a culture of reading at both the school and district level. Families read a chapter from the book each night over a period of about a month. Daily trivia questions, discussions, and other activities in the schools ensure that reading takes center stage in the home, school, and community throughout the duration of the program.

Dozens of schools across the state are participating in Texas Reads One Book. Partnering with Read to Them in the program are the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and AASA, The School Superintendents Association. Based in Alexandria, Va., AASA is the nation’s premier organization for more than 13,000 educational leaders in the U.S. and throughout the world.   

“When a whole district reads a book, there’s a whole lot to talk about!” concludes Gary Anderson, program director and founder of Read to Them. “We believe that by involving parents, schools, and the community, the Texas Reads One Book program will help participating districts create a culture of reading that extends far beyond the actual time of the program.”

Hello again Monday from Burton Independent School District!

What a busy weekend with the Cotton Gin Festival, 5K Run, and the Junior/Senior Prom. Our students really know how to act and look good! Such class!!! Thanks to all who participated!  It’s hard to believe that today we begin the last 6­ weeks of the school year.

I would like to talk about the philosophy of education and why it should be important to you. Behind every school and every teacher is a set of related beliefs that influences what and how students are taught. A philosophy of education represents answers to questions about the purpose of schooling, a teacher’s role, what should be taught, and by what methods.

The emphasis on values and knowledge in Burton ISD has survived through time and is essential to
individual student needs to prepare them for a changing future. Our schools work with youth to improve society and help place the learner at the center of the educational process. My hopes are that we all continue to work together to determine what should be learned and how best to learn it.

More STAAR testing this week, so have your students rested and ready!

It’s Monday in Burton Independent School District and what a beautiful day! Ready to hear about some great student accomplishments? Here goes… 

Recently, Junior High District Track took 1^st place in 32 events with a Combined Men/Women’s Team Score of 329.25. The girls team ranked 1^st with a 208.50 score in 16 events and the boys team ranked 2^nd with a 120.75 score in 16 events. Way to go young panthers!!! 

The following honors were given out to Burton Lady Panthers who helped take their team to the first basketball playoff season since 1993. The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches named Kyeanna Kincade to the All Region Team and the Texas Girls Coaches Association named Amanda Chapdelaine as one of 25 players to the 1A Academic All-State list for excelling in both the classroom and on the basketball court. Congratulations Kyeanna and Amanda! 

Several students participated recently in District UIL Competition. Sophia Layman placed 2^nd in Literary Criticism and will advance on to the regional meet. Good luck and way to go students!  

The One Act Play advanced from District on to Bi-District with an outstanding performance of “Double Date”. Awards went out for All-Star cast, honorable mention, and best crew and lighting. Good job!

The Burton Golf Team took 3 boys and 2 girls to District competition. Kaylor Steele missed going to Regional by 2 strokes and Ciera Muske missed by 1 stroke. Proud of their participation!

How ‘bout the high school district track? Burton came out on top when both the boys and girls took 1^st place to win the whole meet. On to Area!

So proud of how our students represent our school and community!!!

This week our community is preparing to host the 26^th Annual Cotton Gin Festival on Friday, 4/17 and Saturday, 4/18. Looking forward to it. Come on out and enjoy the festivities!

What a great Monday morning coming from Burton Independent School District. Hope everyone had a peaceful Easter and enjoyed some family time. 

Since we consider our school district to be one of the finest in the State of Texas, I want to commend the students, staff, parents, board members, and community for helping to accomplish the pride of the Burton Panthers. You couldn't find a better place to educate children.

Burton ISD was created in 1874 and the first classes began in 1878. In 1937, the two story Rock High School was constructed using locally available building materials. The building was dedicated with a historical marker and is still in use today. Renovations on the inside of the building will begin this Spring. We look forward to seeing the results of this project during the Fall of next school year. 

The spirit of Burton Schools continues with the initiatives that we are putting into place to support our students! Thanks all!

Good morning! Testing season is upon us and our students are prepared for what I know will be continued progress towards academic mastery of meeting state standards.

I received a letter from State Representative Phil Stephenson, District 85 with a copy of an article written for the Dallas Morning-News this last week discussing how Character Education must be the core of Texas Schools.

As we seem to always be challenged by problems facing public schools, it is important to remember that while there are countless theories linking academic success to instructor quality, student demographics, facilities, technology, class size, etc. character education might also be a predictor of a child’s academic and long-term success.

I believe that Burton ISD promotes character building opportunities that allow our students to flourish. I also am quite sure that our parents are laying the foundations to encourage children to embrace educational accomplishments in our school by instilling character building skills. I applaud all efforts to support our students and help them succeed!

April 3rd Burton ISD will observe Good Friday and there will be no school.   Have a great week and Happy Easter!

Welcome back from Burton ISD after what I hope was an enjoyable Spring Break for everyone!

More softball and baseball, as well as track events happening throughout the coming days. I am impressed and appreciate the support from our community for our schools, students, and staff as they are involved in so many activities. Go Panthers!

As this semester always seems to be very busy, it is the time of year to really focus on accountability and with that comes student assessments. I am proud to say that our schools are working diligently in preparation for what I have no doubt will be progress towards continued educational excellence. It takes all of us working together as a team to accomplish the great successes that we enjoy as being part of Burton ISD. Thanks for the opportunity I have to serve our school district. Have a super week!

Happy Spring Break from Burton ISD!

Fabulous news. As part of the Accelerated Reader Program, our elementary students have read 6,382 books and 57,362,800 words so far this school year. What an accomplishment!

Did you know that out of over 14,000 schools in Texas, Burton High ranked 78^th in the top 100 2015 Niche Public High School statistics and opinions as indicated by parents and students? Way to go Burton schools!

All District 30A Boys Basketball selections are as follows: Academic All-District: Seniors Luke Huffer and Brandon Salinas, Freshmen Luke Salinas and Cash Kunkel. Honorable Mention: Senior Luke Huffer, Junior Shane Daniels, and Freshman Cash Kunkel, Congratulations Panthers!!!

Super proud of Sophmore Kyanna Kincade for making the Texas Girls Coaches Association All-State team in volleyball and basketball. You go girl!!! 

Panther Cheerleaders for the 2015-2016 school year are as follows. Representing the High School are Ciera Muske-Captain, Mikaela Lucier-Captain, Emily Harmel, Sydnie Knittel, Amy Teufel, Mackenzie Wilkie, Daisy Mojica, Tyeshia Smith, Cherokee Thrailkill, Calley McGinley, Sidney Smith, and Victoria Parker. Morgan Rollins will be Penny the Panther Mascot and Cassidy Jackson will be the Manager.

Junior High Cheerleaders will be Alex Countouritis, Alea Smith, Kyndal Coufal, Shelby Parker, Rylee Benkley, Gavin Kirkland, LaShona Hancock, and Sabrina Burke. I am sure they all will represent our school well!  

Spring Break can be a time to reflect on the current school year and gear up for the hustle and bustle of the remainder of the spring semester. Spend time with family and friends, hopefully enjoy some sunshine, slow down, put your feet up and relax, and attempt to do something that you might have been wanting to get done for a long time, but just couldn’t fit into your busy schedule.

Looking forward to see everyone come back on Monday, March 23^rd rejuvenated and ready to finish out the school year.
