Superintendent's Letter - Monday, May 24, 2021

Good morning from BURTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT-#TEAMBURTON!!!

May 24, 2021

Praying for health and wellness!!!

Last week of the 2020-2021 school year and I think we are all ready for the Summer Break!

Please plan to join us in celebrating the Senior Class of 2021 during the Graduation Ceremony @ Panther Stadium, 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 28th. We look forward to this special time in acknowledgement of the accomplishments of these students as they head off towards a successful future. We wish them all the best of luck as they embark on a new journey to make their way in the world as productive citizens of our society!

As we prepare for the 2021-2022 school year, we can never underestimate the power of the difference that educators make in the lives of our students. Often times, we ask ourselves “Have we done enough?” – “Are our students prepared to face the challenges that will surely come their way as they move into adulthood?” These questions are common concerns and lead us to consider – “What can we do better?”

Our goals in Burton ISD continue to be that we provide opportunities to impact the lives of our students by whatever educational means necessary. I think we should strive to be better the next day than we were the day before. Refresh and reignite that fire for teaching. Find our purpose. Remember that students are not here for us, but that we are here for them. Be supportive and most of all compassionate to the many circumstances that we may not always understand or be aware of with our students. Because “ALL KIDS DESERVE THE BEST SCHOOLS”!!!

Enjoy the time with family and friends over the next couple of months. Relax, rejuvenate, and reward yourself. Celebrate you! Educators, students, and parents deserve a much needed break!!!

Good morning from BURTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT-#TEAMBURTON!!!

Praying for health and wellness!!!

YAY! We took the masks off and are fortunate to not have any current positive or close contact quarantine COVID-19 situations. Burton ISD will continue to provide a clean, healthy, and sanitized work environment for our students and staff! Our hopes for the rest of the school year are to keep pushing through with as much “normal” Spring busyness as possible. We have band concerts, awards assemblies, banquets, presentations, field trips, special days, and of course graduation planned for our students after they have conquered the testing season. So very proud of how our students, staff, parents, and the community have helped get us through a very different kind of school year! Thank you!

Burton ISD is gearing up for the summer and it could not be more important right now than to prepare your students for some learning engagement in the next few months. Encourage outdoor opportunities to study the environment, collaborate fun get-togethers with peers and other family members, provide times to read a good book and enhance comprehension skills, and just enjoy being together. As we grow older, we are always learning!

After COVID-19, we all need healing, support and encouragement to reconnect with learning and the future of education. We know the importance of social and emotional learning, especially in the times we are living in. We know the importance of culture in learning, post-pandemic era should emphasize that our students need and deserve schools that are student-centered.

I read recently about taking a moment to “pause”. Sometimes our heart tanks feel empty and need to be refilled. It’s okay to take some time to let good thoughts and feelings fill you up. No matter what age-ALL of us can be caught running on empty. Our lives are so busy and so full that it can literally dry your soul out. Remember to take time to refill with the goodness that will keep the light in your eyes shining through and make you smile. Take a moment to refill with good vibes every day--scripture, prayer, sunshine, worship, song, laughter, friends, and hugs. When you refill your empty, you’ll find overflowing joy and happiness.

☀️ 🌻

I would like to give a huge “shout-out” to GeoSouthern for donating $20,000 towards the Elementary Playground renovations. It will certainly go a long way in helping to provide a safe and updated area for our students to enjoy outdoor activities. We are very appreciative of this partnership. Thank you!!!

Texas Association of School Administrators Vision In Practice Guest Blog by Robin Sabo, Clear Creek ISD Secondary Social Studies Coordinator offers the following:

It has been a long year for teachers and students. With crazy full schedules, spring fever hitting everyone, and end of the year paperwork piling up, the weeks around end of the year testing can be a downward slide into time filling busy work or videopaluza.  While videos are powerful learning tools, how and when they are incorporated matters.  As classes transition from first time instruction to test review, it is important for learning to continue bell to bell. Below are a few suggestions to support ongoing learning and growth while reviewing and viewing.

Viewing For Learning

  • Review the Learning Goal — Allow students time to read and talk about the learning goal.

  • Ask an Essential Question — Using your essential question as a guide, have students take notes and react together, in real time, with a discussion board tool. You can even join in on the action, plus the discussion board creates a running record to review afterward.

  • Provide a simple note taking guide (i.e., short vocabulary list, few sentence starters, or a simple graphic organizer) — Like using graphic organizers with reading, the guide helps students record key content in the context in which it is to be understood and/or applied as defined by the learning goal.

  • Add reading and writing to viewing — Transcripts are not always available, but when they are, they can be a learning tool. One option is to have students follow along on the transcript and annotate as they watch. Better yet, have students read the transcript before watching—this way students can create their own big idea questions for the video.

  • Students may not always enjoy it but watching a segment more than once can move a learner from passive to active—and all the way to reactive—viewing.  With each viewing, consider introducing a new question to help students see the video from different perspectives or in a different context.

Reviewing For Growth

  • Change It Up — review content at a conceptual/pattern level across time and place.

  • Make It Fun — debate the most significant historic events or content presented.

  • Add in Color — Use color to categorize content. Integrate art to illustrate.

  • Gameify It — Use popular contests such as Survivor, Family Feud, or Who Wants to be a Millionaire to challenge students.

  • Huddle up — facilitate small group practice test reviews, have small groups focus on specific learning targets, or work with a small group to dig into their thinking around test questions.

  • Know the Why — As in all learning, it is important for students to understand the purpose behind the learning activities. Why is the content important for them to know, what is the real-world connection to the learning, how is this relevant to them? Encourage students to relate key concepts to current headlines, popular songs, or shows.

At Burton ISD, we believe that our contribution to unlocking a brighter future lies within the application of our deep understanding of how learning happens and how the mind develops. It exists where the science of learning meets the art of teaching.

Educators have been and always will be at the core of the learning experience. We encourage our educators to impart their knowledge to students more efficiently. We believe that harnessing technology can enhance learning inside and outside of the classroom by deepening the connections between students and teachers to empower greater success.

We partner with learning engineers, content developers and pedagogical experts to develop increasingly open learning ecosystems that are proven to increase passing rates, elevate grades and enhance engagement for each individual leaner while improving outcomes for all.
