Good morning from BURTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT - #TEAMBURTON!!!

April 26, 2021

Praying for health and wellness!!!

As schools, districts, families, and communities continue to wrestle with the wide-ranging difficulties posed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, they are finding that there are deeper, more complex issues than logistics, technological inequities, and financial considerations. Student health—particularly mental and emotional well-being continues to be greatly affected across the globe.

As the Associated Press (AP) reported in March, a drastic rise in childhood mental health issues is raising warning flags worldwide. For doctors who treat them, the pandemic’s impact on the mental health of children is increasingly alarming. The number of children and young teenagers requiring mental health treatment programs since September has increased significantly. Pediatric psychiatrists say they’re also seeing children with coronavirus-related phobias and obsessions about infection…fearful of getting sick.

In schools across Texas therapists, educators, counselors, and other professionals answered the call for help from their students—in innovative and thoughtful ways. Schools statewide have been providing special assistance for students struggling to cope.

Any student will tell you that school has been a real challenge during the past year. Disrupted schedules. Virtual or hybrid approaches to learning. Technology issues. Isolation from friends and distance from teachers. It’s a lot for students to deal with while trying to maintain good grades.

For those students already struggling with social-emotional issues or physical and intellectual disabilities, the challenges are magnified.

Burton ISD staff has been able to shine a light on innovative ways to assist our student population in leaving the stress behind. As we work to help students cope with additional stress, we are adapting approaches as we go—sometimes finding that, even amid chaos, a fresh perspective can arise to handle the social-emotional issues in an upended world.

Our goal is to provide benefits and support to handle increased pressures for everyone in a Topsy-Turvy year! A safe, judgement-free space to work through difficult things that life has thrown at them helps students develop skills needed to be successful in school. Some examples are emotional regulation, self-care to lessen symptoms of anxiety and depression, and building self-confidence.

Schools have been empowered to be a place of stability for students during transitional situations. We know that Burton ISD staff is definitely making a difference as we prepare for what lies ahead.

We welcome you to visit one of the finest school districts in the state of Texas and thank you in advance for taking time to find out more about our schools, our professional staff, our exemplary students, and our excellent academic programs. Burton Schools are a perfect place to get an education that will prepare your child for a bright future.

There is a tremendous amount of community support that goes into the success of our programs in Burton ISD. We appreciate everyone who helps make a positive impact on our schools. All of us working cooperatively make Burton ISD better together. Proud to be a BURTON PANTHER!

The TASA (Texas Association of School Administrators) Blog for Future-Focused Educators

Vision in Practice has the following post…

Creating: Why It’s Bloom’s Highest Level For a Reason-BY CATHERINE MCGUINNESS

Bloom’s taxonomy has several layers and it is something that every educator is aware of. But there is a hierarchy and levels of importance on various levels. Higher order thinking skills allow our students to be able to continuously push themselves and ultimately lead to more effective ways of understanding and studying the content areas.

What I love about the highest levels of Bloom’s is the fact that students start analyzing and really have to think for themselves. Whether it is through visualization, creation or problem solving- higher order thinking skills are essential in building up our students to face the next challenges.  As we continue to prepare our students for jobs that have potentially not even been created yet, it is essential that we focus on these higher levels of thinking skills to give them every opportunity to succeed.

Some examples of how you can use CREATING verbs in your classroom are:

Blogging

Leading

Assemble

Improve

Composing

Invent

Author

Elaborate

Devising

Create

Investigate

Maximize

Podcasting

Remix

Theorize

Minimize

Facilitating

Design

Propose

Modify

Real examples in the classroom might include.

  • Create: Allowing a student to set up a fake twitter account (but with historically accurate information) for a historical figure. Summarize major accomplishments in several posts that are limited in the 140 characters per post.

  • Design: A PSA over the topic being discussed. In Biology it could be an ecosystem, etc.

  • Improve: Use a current invention or policy and have students go through steps to improve the design or innovation. Have students defend why their invention is an improvement.

  • Podcasting: Allowing students to showcase both sides of an argument by creating sound justification and record their arguments.

Let’s challenge our students to CREATE!

More influential points taken from the book Future Driven: Will Your Students Thrive In an Unpredictable World? by David Geurin.

Digital Matters - “Every educator should be a digital leader. It’s that important for the future. If we don’t have the right thinking about technology, our kids will suffer.”

Embrace Change – “Let’s crush the status quo. Be a champion for change. You are needed as a change maker.”

Making Learning Meaningful - “Make learning personally meaningful and students will find their passions and become self-determined, lifelong learners.”

Pushing Forward - “Break free of mediocrity and aim for excellence. Your work matters. Let’s keep our focus on what matters most.”

On a personal level, we need to own the mistakes we’ve made and not claim to have all the answers. Examples of our own missteps and examples of those who failed to adapt can inspire others to be more open to change.

“Schools should be less like time capsules and more like a time machine”.

Our words are so powerful. We can build or we can tear down, but our words will have an effect. Focusing on how things are said and the change that you can implement can be far reaching. It is a realistic viewpoint on how we are all strapped for time. However, it is clear that time for excuses are over and we have to do what is best for our students. Schools are not changing. Many classrooms look exactly like they did 30 years ago. Maybe the chalkboard is updated, but everything else is the same.

Our world has changed so much in 30 years and our classrooms should reflect this change. We can’t say everything we did in education in a decade was perfect, so why not adapt and change? We can no longer be the “one trick pony” anymore. It is important that we adapt with the times, if what we are doing is not working. There is more to being college ready. Students need to be life, career and college ready. FUTURE READY!

“Treat your students like they are world changers now”.

“Our goal should be for kids to be more excited about learning tomorrow than they are today”.

Let’s start implementing change today.

Praying everyone is staying healthy and well!!!

The book Future Driven: Will Your Students Thrive In an Unpredictable World? by David Geurin is the perfect book for when you are thinking of all the jobs that our students will one day occupy that have yet to be created.

Some questions that came from the book are: Are we shaping the future, preparing for unexpected challenges? How will we press on? What will we rise above?

Suggestions like “the best companies are 20 years in the future, schools can’t afford to be 20 years in the past” really should make us think about how we connect, grow, and serve by believing in our students, building relationships, and bringing positive energy.

As educators, we have the opportunity to make learning irresistible. “Student passions must be valued just as much as proficiency”.

“Learning is giving good gifts. It’s giving the best of you. It’s wondering, creating, and having the courage to do something original”.

It’s time to take full ownership and responsibility to facilitate true empowerment. You can’t learn for another human being. But you can inspire.”

“In times of rapid change, you must quickly learn the knowledge and skills needed to survive and ultimately thrive. If we want adaptable learners, we need adaptable schools.”

Let’s consider everyone as a Learner. “Teaching will test everything you’ve got. The key is not arriving at perfection. It’s to never stop growing. Be content with today’s best. But never be satisfied.”

Learn, Unlearn, Relearn - “Better schools are built on better thinking. What kinds of questions are you asking? Are students making meaning or accepting information?”

And then there is the community and beyond. “Cultures are literally colliding. Conflict is escalating. An important goal of education must be to bring people together to create global understanding.”
