Creating: Why It’s Bloom’s Highest Level For a Reason-BY CATHERINE MCGUINNESS
Bloom’s taxonomy has several layers and it is something that every educator is aware of. But there is a hierarchy and levels of importance on various levels. Higher order thinking skills allow our students to be able to continuously push themselves and ultimately lead to more effective ways of understanding and studying the content areas.
What I love about the highest levels of Bloom’s is the fact that students start analyzing and really have to think for themselves. Whether it is through visualization, creation or problem solving- higher order thinking skills are essential in building up our students to face the next challenges. As we continue to prepare our students for jobs that have potentially not even been created yet, it is essential that we focus on these higher levels of thinking skills to give them every opportunity to succeed.
Some examples of how you can use CREATING verbs in your classroom are:
Real examples in the classroom might include.
Create: Allowing a student to set up a fake twitter account (but with historically accurate information) for a historical figure. Summarize major accomplishments in several posts that are limited in the 140 characters per post.
Design: A PSA over the topic being discussed. In Biology it could be an ecosystem, etc.
Improve: Use a current invention or policy and have students go through steps to improve the design or innovation. Have students defend why their invention is an improvement.
Podcasting: Allowing students to showcase both sides of an argument by creating sound justification and record their arguments.
